Select Distribution Platforms

Choose Amazon KDP, Smashwords, or Draft2Digital, and review their terms and royalty rates. Below is a list of platforms to consider, including their royalty rates based on available information. Always check the latest terms on each platform’s website, as rates and conditions can change.

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)

Royalty Rates: 70% on eBooks priced $2.99–$9.99 (minus delivery costs, approximately $0.15 per MB); 35% on eBooks priced outside this range. Print books offer up to 60% (minus printing costs), dropping to 50% for prices below $9.98 in some markets.

Notes: Free ISBN for print, but exclusivity through KDP Select (minimum 90 days) increases royalties with Kindle Unlimited page reads (varies, approximately $0.40–$0.50 per 100 pages).

Draft2Digital (D2D)

Royalty Rates: 90% of net royalties from retailers (after their cut, e.g., approximately 60% of list price from Amazon, 51% in some European markets like Germany).

Notes: Widely available on Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, etc., with no exclusivity and a 10% fee per sale. The recent merger with Smashwords broadens service options.

Smashwords (now integrated with Draft2Digital)

Royalty Rates: Up to 80% on sales through their store; 60% via other retailers (e.g., Apple, Barnes & Noble).

Notes: Broad distribution, no exclusivity, with tools like coupons. Royalty details may align with D2D post-merger.

IngramSpark

Royalty Rates: 45% of list price for eBooks; 40% for print (minus printing costs) through expanded distribution.

Notes: Suitable for print and global bookstore distribution, with setup fees ($25–$49) but no per-sale commission.

These platforms offer varied reach—KDP dominates Amazon sales, D2D/Smashwords provides broad distribution, and IngramSpark specializes in print. Weigh the exclusivity trade-offs and consider your appeal to the American market when making a decision.
